Abstract
THE 2020 KENYA CONTINUOUS HOUSEHOLD SURVEY Micro data
In order to meet the increased demand for statistics, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) undertakes periodic statistical activities to update the national socio-economic database and fill existing data gaps. Employment and poverty indicators have been identified as some of the current data gaps. Some of the surveys that the Bureau has conducted to address these data gaps include; Rural Household Budget Survey (RHBS) 1981/82, Urban Household Budget 4 Surveys (UHBS) 1983/84 and 1993/94, the Welfare Monitoring Survey (WMS) 1992, 1994, 1997, Kenya Integrated Household Budget Survey (KIHBS)2005/06 and 2015/16. Data on labour has been collected in a modular form from various surveys such as 2005/06 and 2015/16 Kenya Integrated Household Budget Survey (KIHBS), Medium, Small and Micro Enterprises (MSME) Survey etc. The last independent survey conducted to collect data on employment was the Labour Force Survey of 1998.
The Kenya Continuous Household Survey Programme (KCHSP) aims at addressing some of the existing data gaps. The programme has been providing a constant stream of data on a wide range of social and economic issues relevant to Kenya. KCHSP provides quarterly data on socio-economic indicators. The key modules in this programme (KCHSP) are; the quarterly labour force and the quarterly household budget which will provide data on employment and household consumption, respectively.
The programme also provide data on housing, household characteristics and any other topical issues. KCHSP data collection is continuous and the third phase of data collection is ongoing. The survey micro data and reports first and second phase are out. Once data cleaning and analysis is completed, both the Micro data and the survey reports are archived and disseminated through KNBS website for public use. The quarterly and report annual reports year 2020 phase are out. KCHSP labour reports and micro data are uploaded quarterly. The second phase of KCHSP (2020) Micro data is in two datasets, the housing and household characteristics datasets. There is no difference in terms of variables in different phases. The 2020 data is now available on KNBS website.
