Abstract
The Usawa 1st Secondary School Survey (SESS) 2022 Report investigates the extent of inequity in Kenya’s secondary school system. The study examines how school categorization—national, extra-county, county, and sub-county—affects access to resources, quality of education, and student performance. Using stratified random sampling, the survey assessed 339 schools across all categories, analyzing factors such as teacher deployment, infrastructure, academic outcomes, and school health services.
Key findings highlight disparities in resource allocation, with national schools receiving the most support while sub-county schools struggle with limited facilities and fewer trained teachers. The report also explores the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on school attendance and dropout rates, particularly among girls, revealing that teenage pregnancy and financial constraints significantly affected enrollment. Additionally, the study identifies gender disparities in science laboratory availability and leadership representation, with female students and leaders being underrepresented.

Sampling
Sampling Procedure
The sample of schools that participated in the study were selected using stratified random sampling, to obtain a nationally representative sample of 376 secondary schools. Stratification was done at three levels: county, gender and category of schools. Six different categories of schools were sampled from national, extra-county, county, sub-county, private and special schools. Further stratification was made into boys, girls and mixed secondary schools.
