Abstract
The Kenya Integrated Household Budget Survey (KIHBS 2005/06) Project was to collect a wide spectrum of socio-economic indicators required to measure, monitor and analyse the progress made in improving living standards. Specifically, the KIHBS was designed to update and strengthen three vital aspects of the national statistical database, notably: the Consumer Price Index (CPI), poverty and inequality; and the System of National Accounts (SNA). The data collection phase of this survey took 12 months and data on demographics, housing, education, health, agriculture and livestock, enterprises, expenditure and consumption, among others, was collected.

Compared to v1.1 this version this version has been subjected to basic anonymization procedure. This involved (a) removing NASSEPIV indentifiers below the district level, (b) scramling of NASSEPIV household identifiers and replaced by a serialised household identifier, and (c) removing household GIS coordinates. In addition this version contains additional modules; Labour Child health and enterprises.

The Kenya Integrated Household Budget Survey 2005/06 is designed to provide numerous indicators and the data needed to measure living standards and poverty in Kenya, with particular emphasis on updating the Consumer Price Index (CPI), and providing new estimates of the household accounts for the national accounting system.
The Household Questionnaire consisted of 21 integrated modules designed to collect information on the following: demographics; education; health, fertility and mortality; employment; labour; child health and nutrition; housing; water, sanitation and energy use; food consumption and expenditures; non-food consumption; ownership of durable goods; agricultural holdings, activities and outputs; livestock; household economic enterprises; transfers; income; credit; and recent shocks to household welfare. There were two household diaries: one diary to record goods and services purchased, and the other to record goods and services consumed by the household.

Sampling Procedure
Sample Design
KNBS has established the NASSEP IV sampling frame based on the 1999 Population and Housing Census. The sample design of the KIHBS 2005/2006 is based on this frame. The survey drew a sample of clusters from the set of 540 urban clusters and the 1,260 rural clusters under NASSEP IV Sampling frame.
The KIHBS 2005/2006 covered a total of 1,343 clusters with a total sample of 13,430 households, stratified by district and by Urban/Rural.
In the first stage, using the KNBS Master Sample (NASSEP IV), 1,343 clusters were selected with equal probability within a district. In the second stage, 10 households were selected with equal probability in each cluster.
A total sample of 13,430 households (10 households in each of 1,430 Primary Sampling Units - called clusters,) was allocated into 136 explicit strata (the urban and rural sections of each of Kenya's 69 districts, except in Nairobi and Mombassa, which are wholly urban). The 1,343 clusters required by the KIHBS were selected from the CBS 1,800-cluster master sample. This selection was done with equal probability within each stratum, except for the six districts that contain urban areas qualified as municipalities. In these districts, the urban part of the sample was further stratified into six groups (five socio-economic classes in the municipality itself and other urban areas in the district,).

Deviations from the Sample Design
From the design sample of 1,343 clusters, only 1,339 clusters were covered the remianing 4 clusters were not covered due to Inaccessibilty and security issues.
Weighting
Calculation of weights
The probability P of selecting a KIHBS household is therefore P = P1* P2* P3* P4 (the product of four factors that represent):
[1] the probability of selecting the EA for the master sample, among all the 1999 Census EAs;
[2] the probability of selecting the segment, among all segments in the EA;
[3] the probability of selecting the cluster for the KIHBS, among all clusters in the master sample; and
[4] the probability of selecting the household, among all households in the cluster.
The Master Sample EAs were originally selected with probability proportional to size (pps,) using as a measure of size the expected number of 100-household segments in the EA. The actual number of segments created during the master sample field operations may have been different from the expected number. The weights are computed as the inverse of the selection probabilities.

Supervision
In order to ensure quality control of the data collected, a team of CBS staff, designated as coordinators, visited the field teams once every cycle for at least six days.
This helped to ensure the field teams were adhering to instructions they received during the training programme and contained in the KIHBS interviewer manual. It also contributed in building first-hand knowledge of the clusters and field collection conditions among the CBS staff, which is critical at the analysis stage. The CBS staff who contributed to this report are intimately familiar with the data.
The coordinators were also responsible for ensuring that focus group discussions were held with the assistance of the District Statistical Officers (DSOs); the latter were instrumental in ensuring that teams were clear on their cluster boundaries. They were also responsible for providing any required logistical support to the team on the ground.

Data editing took place at the data collection in the field inluding;
a) During data entry in the field,
b) Structure checking and completeness and
c) Structural checking of SPSS data files

Other Processing
Data were processed in clusters, with each cluster being processed as a complete unit . Each cluster was entered in the field using a customized system developed using the Foxpro software.
In this system validation and structure checks were in built. In total there were 44 teams for the whole survey and in each team a data entry operator was assigned the duties of entering the data in the field.
The data was then submitted to the Headquarters by a supervisory team every fortnight using the USB memory storage disks for on ward compilation and the eventual transfer to the statistical analysis software (SPSS).
Additional structural Checks was performed by a team of officers from KNBS using the SPSS software after the data had been compiled.
Tabulations was then carried out using the edited data for the purpose of producing Kenya Integrated Household Budget Survey 2005/06 report, the report on wellbeing in Kenya among other reports
